How & When Should You Get Your Credit Reports?
Updated on June 28, 2019
Knowing how and when to get your credit reports is just as important as knowing what’s on them! Luckily, there are simple and free ways to get access to your reports.
How Do You Get Your Credit Reports?
You can get one free credit report from TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian, once every 12 months from annualcreditreport.com. Once you go to this site, you will be asked to provide personal information to confirm your identity. After confirmation, you will have access to view and download your three credit reports. It’s as simple as that!
When Should You Order Your Credit Reports?
So you may be wondering, “should I order all three reports now or spread them out over time?” This answer depends on you. If you’re looking to make a large purchase soon, like a house or a new car, you may want to review all three of your credit reports immediately. This will give you time to review your credit report, check for errors, and get them fixed if there are any!
If you’re not looking to make a large purchase soon, you may want to spread your free reports over the timespan of a year. Since you get one free credit report from all three credit bureaus, you can order one report every four months. This will allow you to freely check for any changes or suspicious activity throughout the year. Whichever strategy you choose, make sure to mark your calendar so you know when you can request your next free credit report.
